conversely, i apparently had a very low threshold for what should count as ugly algebra and would give up way too easily but i had a friend who would just slog through the simplifications long after i would have given up...

just watching him work through problems a few times caused a cognitive switch to flip and made me more persevering. i still think this is one of the most useful math 'tricks' i've learned

I've always found it interesting in math in general how many hard to articulate heuristics seem to gradually build up and guide the process of solving a problem or writing a proof. Much more intuition involved than I think some realize
