I'm not wild about gotcha journalism. But geez I'd love to ask some of the people writing about climate some basic questions. What are total CO2 emissions per year? What percentage is due to the US? To China? To coal? To power generation?

How man climate scientists believe that climate change could kill anywhere close to 90% of the global population? I doubt it will kill even 0.1%.

Right, I was just pointing out that some people say “it’s not an EXISTENTIAL threat unless humans go entirely extinct, and we should prioritize EXISTENTIAL threats over just-bad things, so work on AI safety instead of climate.”

A lot of moral posturing doesn't seem to recognize that existential crises are only existential before a bottleneck (say, the recent ice age, or the Black Death).

I wonder how to evaluate the morality of planning for worst-case population reduction - eg, how to most effectively disseminate the knowledge to bootstrap civilization and avoid another 4k years of relearning basics.
