Contemporary American “politics” is mostly about who deserves dignity and who should be ritually humiliated.
Remarkable hearing a self-described Nazi issuing RITUAL HUMILIATION as the ultimate threat.

I had a girlfriend in the 80s who was into extreme sadomasochism. I am not, but I was peripherally involved in the SF kink scene for a few years. I have watched close-up everything you can imagine and lots you can’t. I was fine with nearly everything. Consensual adults, whatever.

I drew the line at ritual humiliation. Maybe I’m prudish, but I don’t think that’s OK. What does it say about contemporary society (or me?) that so many people are publicly lusting for kink scenes that (to me) seem beyond the pale, far worse than stuff that left permanent scars?

Replying to @Meaningness
A lot of putative interview/debate shows on tv seem to have devolved into public arenas for ritually humiliating a member of the ideological outgroup. The Cathy Newman interview of JP showed this off starkly, I thought, with barrage of bad-faith questions. (Not a JP fan, btw)

Yes, that’s exactly what I was pointing at. (The general phenomenon, I mean, not that particular interview.)
