Contemporary American “politics” is mostly about who deserves dignity and who should be ritually humiliated. Remarkable hearing a self-described Nazi issuing RITUAL HUMILIATION as the ultimate threat. ♻️@mtraven https://twitter.com/atheist_cvnt/status/1191157832546041856 …

I had a girlfriend in the 80s who was into extreme sadomasochism. I am not, but I was peripherally involved in the SF kink scene for a few years. I have watched close-up everything you can imagine and lots you can’t. I was fine with nearly everything. Consensual adults, whatever.

I drew the line at ritual humiliation. Maybe I’m prudish, but I don’t think that’s OK. What does it say about contemporary society (or me?) that so many people are publicly lusting for kink scenes that (to me) seem beyond the pale, far worse than stuff that left permanent scars?

I'm a little unclear what "publicly lusting for kink scenes" is pointing to? Scene in the sense of "punk scene"? Scene as in theatre scenes? Drawing parallels between actual BDSM and politics somehow? #confused 🤔😬🤗

Yes, I was pointing to that last analogy. Not clear that it’s the same energy though. Probably unfair to sadomasochists in tarring them by association with political activists.

A lot of putative interview/debate shows on tv seem to have devolved into public arenas for ritually humiliating a member of the ideological outgroup. The Cathy Newman interview of JP showed this off starkly, I thought, with barrage of bad-faith questions. (Not a JP fan, btw)

Yes, that’s exactly what I was pointing at. (The general phenomenon, I mean, not that particular interview.)

Guess: people would rather be humiliated and remember that they can feel something deeply, than not be humiliated and feel only mild interest or disinterest.

Not to use a cliche here, but the permanent scars from ritual humiliation seem a lot more damaging. The issue I see with ritual humiliation is there's no way to truly contain it, whereas a scar from some beatings can be akin to some sports injury.

It tells us that Mao'ism captured a lot more mindshare than people imagine. (And remember that when Americans complain about the Chinese internet. That is NOT about us us us! It's about preventing resurgence of the Mao genie and Cultural Revolution II ...)

what, technically, is "ritual" humiliation, is it separate to the regular kind?
