Well, this is an empirical question, and not enough empirical work has been done afaik. Informally, it seems that demonstrating to yourself and others that you are adequately moral, including in your degree of loyalty to your tribe, is the foremost need for many.

Don't forget also - imagining that you understand the world, that you feel you can partially predict it. And control it, through magic like "consciousness raising", hairshirt-wearing [eg recycling] and performative outrage.
