Totally agree about politics. What would make a better substitute for religion not "religion"? (I'm sensing a certain entrapment by conceptual categories.)

Yes; it’s certainly nebulous what counts as “religion.” And I count myself as religious, although as an atheist some people would say I can’t be.

Well, this is an empirical question, and not enough empirical work has been done afaik. Informally, it seems that demonstrating to yourself and others that you are adequately moral, including in your degree of loyalty to your tribe, is the foremost need for many.

Yes; but the extant religions all have defects serious enough that most people can’t. Which is why they put something else in religion’s rightful place.
