(Quick: recommendations for an Avengers episode? Must be Mrs. Peele, of course.)

Uh, sorry, that was officially called “A Touch of Brimstone.” https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0516805/ … The episodes around then were all really good

I think you're about my age. I got attached to "The Avengers" at CalTech in 1977. Dawn is tolerant, but I suspect that my nostalgia for the show is more about who I was then than its inherent quality.

I discovered The Avengers only about ten years ago, which suggests that the merit of the show goes beyond nostalgia. Although maybe it has something to do with my nostalgic attachment to Britishness, sensibly not shared by
@_awbery_ who is more British than me.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

Even in Britain I am nostalgic for Britain.

The creative plumbing... the convenience of hanging laundry in the rain to dry... the prompt table service...

the table service thing is real then? thought I was taking crazy pills last time I visited. it's not just a prank they play on too-obviously American people?

It’s embarrassingly real I’m afraid. Waiting tables is badly paid in UK and tips are optional. Also there’s no culture of good customer service. It’s not just wrt wait service - all forms of retail too. Getting much better than it used to be tho.

maybe next time I should just wear a hat that says "I tip 20%" on it and see what happens

That’s extremely offensive and you will be escorted to Heathrow by HM Bobbies and put on the next plane to the colonies

However, if you tip that generously (it’s very generous by UK standards) and return to the same place, you may find very welcoming, friendly staff. I’ve worked in bars and waited tables. I suspect there’s a wide range wrt what’s considered ‘normal’ customer behaviour in UK.
