I remember Chandra vividly. I saw him often, since he was a member of the same research group to which I belonged (for five years.) He was a severe and forbidding presence, always in dark suit and tie; he seemed to think exclusively in formulae of the most intricate sort.

He admired my doctoral adviser, Robert Geroch, who he told me reminded him of John von Neumann. But it's hard to think of two persons less similar than Chandra and Bob -- the latter so casual, the former so formal. For Chandra, erudition was a sort of religious discipline.

Chandrasekhar's touch is present in almost all forms of astrophysics. Modern astrophysics would be very different without him.
