Sufficiently good case studies of meta-rationality ought to convince sincere rationalists by their own tenets. “Post-rationalism,” btw, is a term almost no one uses for a self-identification. It’s mostly a joke, and definitely not a coherent movement, clique, or set of beliefs.pic.twitter.com/xetFQMBsN3
I think we, once again, need a new term to describe “the position that thinking clearly is worthwhile” because “rationalist” doesn’t really have that connotation (now, and maybe not ever.)
Well, the issue is that whatever the word chosen is, almost no one will oppose it, and a naming that fails to draw distinctions won't have much usefulness
(Who is against clear thinking!)
Damn near everyone, tacitly! Most people are really not comfortable with ideas that challenge their identities. (Including me!)
“Most of what you’re doing isn’t really interfacing with Reality as you would when there was a real life thing you cared about” is an important idea but I don’t think it works well as an identity label or mass movement.
For this too, I think challenging the folk belief in “beliefs” as a coherent definite category may be key. Relatedly, breaking up the folk category “values”. Because people think our current political dysfunction is about beliefs and values, and it isn’t at all.
Huh. I think it’s about branding & associations, which I guess are technically different than beliefs and values. (And maybe some conflict is about framings? That’s the more substantive kind.)
Yes I think this is exactly right. Cfhttps://vividness.live/2015/10/05/buddhist-ethics-is-advertising/ …
And the majority of public discourse about ethics is actually "ethics" in this sense.
Unfortunately so!
