There’s a thousand dumb little cartelized professions like optometry that have no accountability and no incentive to do their job properly and just charge for mandatory gatekeeping. Fortunately, you can bypass some of them...https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/high-street-opticians-giving-shocking-eye-tests-and-incorrect-prescriptions-report-reveals_uk_59e5ccf5e4b02a215b32b068?guccounter=1 …

Here in France we don't have the same problems. The guy who writes the prescription for glasses is a doctor, doesn't sell glasses and therefore isn't afraid you're going to go to a competing online optician.

The basic trick is to buy a kit with all the lenses, which costs about $200. (Share cost with a friend?) Then you can just try them out until it’s right. And then order glasses with the prescription online. I use Zenni; they cost ~$50-100.

I went through several optometrists until I found one who cared about getting the numbers exactly right and not underprescribing He retired but I've gone through so many glasses now that I can guess the new RX from my current optical distortions
