The mechanistic explanation has WAY more moving parts than the math of selection in population genetics. Molecular genetics is incredibly complicated, does vary considerably between organisms, and many details are still unclear.
More moving parts are a good thing on the Deutschian view, provided they all map on to the explicanda and best existing theories. Think he’d also want to say the math isn’t really an explanation unless it has some account of how it explains the phenomenon. (Out of my depth here!)
