An approach that has dramatically reduced the stress of public speaking for me is to put the benchmark of success at "pretty good" and grind basic presentation skills enough to know that things have to go quite wrong for me to not hit that.

Don't get me wrong, I want to give a great talk, but if the worst that happens is I get up on stage and it's fine then that's nothing to worry about. Once my talks hit that benchmark they now become things I can tinker with to make them great instead of something I stress about.

This didn't quite work this year at PyCon UK because I wasn't sure I could pull the talk off, but as soon as I got the talk to a point where I knew that I could do it and it would be pretty much OK all the stress dropped away.

The virtually ad libbed lightning talk was fine though because lightning talks are almost entirely basic presentation skills and you don't have long enough to give a bad lightning talk for any reason other than deliberately doing so or by failure at the basics.

(Deliberately doing so basically being doing a lightning talk about something you shouldn't have done a lightning talk about, and I'm not short of appropriate things I can enthuse about for five minutes)

Was that lightning talk I gave amazing? Hell no. Could I have done better? If I'd sunk a lot more effort into it, sure. Would I have sunk a lot more effort into a lightning talk? Probably not. Was it a significant improvement on my *not* giving that lightning talk? Yup.

In general life gets much less stressful when you can set the benchmark for success at doing something as that it is better than not doing it, and treat everything past that point as desirable but optional room for improvement.

Oh, translation issue: In UK English "pretty good" is less positive than "good". i.e. it's better than OK but worse than simply saying something is good. I think in the US "pretty" in "pretty good" is an intensifier, so generally meant more positively than a plain "good".

I kinda think this is not true of the US, but I have British parents and spouse so my opinion is unreliable

          Unreliable or pretty unreliable?

Really depends on the inflection to me. If I read it only then I think slightly better than good.
