I've often found Rota's essays helpful. I have a copy of Thurston's paper but never read it. Definitely need to.

"The Pragmatic Programmer" really did help me, as did "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs", in my view those and Hamming's book are all at extremes for particular facets of programming.
