Out-of-consensus thinking about the state of biology, from an outsider. Some confirms my intuitions; some novel insights; some contradicts my priors surprisingly, but I can believe may be correct.https://twitter.com/alexeyguzey/status/1162017187919478784 …

Academic biology labs are substantial businesses, with many of the same issues as (e.g.) tech startups, but the management structure is archaic, and works only if a good scientist spends all their time being a good manager instead. Rare combination, @alexeyguzey notes!pic.twitter.com/gkCgy3Sw3T

“The Gell-Mann amnesia effect, but for science”: I figured out decades ago that, in the somewhat odd fields I know well, _Science_ publishes flashy garbage that appeals to outsiders for superficial reasons. I assumed that in mainstream fields, they published the best stuff.pic.twitter.com/wjQqN7IF6e

They do need to appeal to stuff that's in-field. But it's all about that impact factor. If they publish 1 study that get 10000 citations and 9 studies that get retracted 6 months later that's a win for them.

Generalized Gell-Mann amnesia (Guzey amnesia? :D): You know that the majority of papers in your field of expertise are wrong or meaningless but when looking at papers from other fields, you take every result at face value.

While not all is garbage I find reading Nature/Science papers frustrating - for the reason that they don't spend so much attention to the methodology compared to what is published e.g. in Astrophysical Journal and Astronomy & Astrophysics in my field.
