I dunno. If -- IF -- a PhD has any value at all beyond that of the much shorter master's degree, it's in the experience of thinking very hard about something specific for several years. Not sure that can be compressed.

Thanks—I think this is totally right and an important corrective. OTOH, in most programs there’s a lot of time-wasting bullshit required, and not nearly enough good-enough mentoring. Seems likely to only get worse in academia; could a different context do better?

I think 1 of the difficulties will be producing an alternate institution that gives people like Agre the flexibility to get completely sidetracked for years. (I know that not many places are like the MIT AI Lab in its glory days - but it's not like it's better *outside* academia

There’s a difficult balancing act between too much structure/incentive, which stifles creativity, and too little, which can lead to spending a year failing to write a vampire novel (e.g. in my case). No general solution but maybe heuristics, plus sensitivity to the problem
