Interestingly the twitter preview cut off the last 2 lines and I went “Huh, this is not a straw man. Kirk is basically correct” (ironically as a Bayesian meta-conclusion)

makes me wonder if it’s common for genre savvy protagonists to include plot armor in their calculations

My favorite serial, A Practical Guide to Evil, plays with this a lot. E.g. one of the protogonist's companions gets thrown off a cliff. She concludes the thrower deliberately spared him, because any character thrown off a cliff always returns in the third act.
