This thread is a fascinating micro-essay that does what the best essays do: points out something important that you've seen many times, but never consciously analyzed.https://twitter.com/Meaningness/status/1156967897673035776 …

Oh, I *have* consciously analyzed it. My favorite linguist is Gerald Gazdar and no one in technology knows him 😆 The world could be a much better place. Given, Gazdar did complain about academia and the state of the field, but why lose your allies?

He is working on formalizing natural language. State of the art. What he wrote in the 1970s feels as if this was written yesterday. Somewhere around the second AI winter he also talked about NLP and Lisp.

Why is it that the author had to pick linguistics as the academic field to crucify? They also referred to @zeynep for saying that Progress Studies has been part of academia and we should read related works. I am happy that we have female role models.

Also, there is more to linguistics than Chomsky. Try Gazdar.

I guess David would say that language is too nebulous (https://meaningness.com/nebulosity ) to be formalized

I would say that… On the other hand, there’s always been some people doing good work in linguistics, even during its darkest days.
