It's time for web 2.0 But srsly, typically these things are replaced by a different unexpected UX. It will come with some killer app that isn't possible in the existing system. A better version of the current thing might not be a big enough leap

Yes, finding the small niche that absolutely has to have missing functionality is key. Possibly HIPPA or financial transactions, as trust in the web approaches zero.

I don’t envisage or want a full replacement; if ad-supported clickbait dies as everyone gradually switches over to a platform that makes ad surveillance impossible, I’m fine with that.

Interesting… nb: 2013, and switch to microtransactions. Everyone agrees that microtransactions would go a long way to fixing current mess, but that they are impossible for non-technical reasons. User resistance is usually cited, but I continue to suspect it’s KYC/AML
