Seems like a semantic question to me. Certainly Socrates would recognize it as philosophy in an instant. In the end, I don’t really care what tag we put on the discourse; I find academic philosophy tediously preoccupied with its own culture.

In philosophy (the love of contemplation, about reality) all reasoning is good. "Bad" thinking is in the realm of politics/religion, not philosophy.

literally lol at the other hand that felt "thinking outside of academia" needs a warning/might-have-side-effects disclaimer, as if the very same does not apply inside the institutions.

There's absolutely room for a good conversation this matter. I personally get interested in problems of battle for legitimacy , appeal to authority, appeal to tradition disguised as appeal to reason , etc. Both sides can be guilty

William James was an academic. On the other hand, all his efforts couldn’t get C. S. Pearce a professorship. Emerson wasn’t an academic. Nietzsche was a academic philologist but not an academic philosopher and not an academic during his productive period.

What seems to matter is serious acquaintance with the philosophical tradition, and this is usually best done by some sort of rigorous academic training, but it need not be.
