Optimal timing for “I told you so” is when there’s enough evidence that you are unlikely to be wrong, yet before it’s so obvious everyone pretends “we never believed in that thing.” Already too late for me to get credit for dissing DL for years?https://twitter.com/dmonett/status/1154876433564655616 …

So, this is something I don't know very much about and am simply learning. But, so far, it seems to me that almost all the DL stuff I've seen are specialized solutions. ieDeep Blue doesn't succeed without designing and adjusting it to specifically to beat Kasparov. Is that right?

Deep Blue didn’t use deep learning as far as I know? Just tree search. You’re probably thinking of AlphaGo? I think the main observation about these is that board games are exactly the sort of thing computers are good at and people are bad at, so no surprise they do well.

Err, ... no surprise in a deep philosophical sense, but an engineering triumph nonetheless! Analogy: Putting a man on the moon required no "esoteric" technology. And yet we rightly view it with profound awe.

I guess I don’t see why one should be impressed? Board games are the sort of things computers are good at and people are bad at. (Zero nebulosity = easy for computers; vast mostly-meaningless search space = hard for people.)

Sorry for being a grump, but I also disagree here. Humans are much better than traditional computing algorithms at avoiding bad search directions: the vastness of the search space is what made Go so difficult. Further, MCTS has been used for SC2 and Dota2 which are 'nebulous'.

AlphaGo brute-forced the static evaluator, where DeepBlue brute-forced the search. Play millions of games and remember what worked. Unsurprising that this succeeds.

SC2 and Dota2 are not nebulous at all. They involve some uncertainty but not ontological nebulosity. My understanding is also that the DL players cheat by having complete instantaneous access to the game state, which eliminates much of the uncertainty.

That's incorrect, the current version of the SC2 bot has the same APM restrictions that a human has, and only 'sees' the game state in the place where the camera is focused, so the NN has to choose where to focus its attention.

I agree with your overall point, that deep learning has A LOT of hype, and people don't give baselines nearly enough love (cc @Smerity) - but AlphaStar, SC2, Dota2 etc, are all genuinely triumphs by incredible teams.

Well, I guess the question here is “how impressed should one be,” and I’m not. I suspect these seem impressive only because they implicitly imply generalizations that I doubt hold. The fact the computers can play games is not interesting in itself. https://meaningness.com/metablog/artificial-intelligence-progress …pic.twitter.com/xcflvEgDPR

I absolutely love the paragraph you quoted, and, I've used a version of that argument to argue against using 3rd surface plots - they are more impressive than useful, and they give a fake impression of sophistication. I think you are right on the point of disagreement :)
