Some of friendliest people I meet are in bowling alleys. Some of the coldest people I meet are in academia and in spiritual centers. Go figure.

When I was a graduate student, a friend of mine (son of a Stanford poli sci professor who was a frequent consultant to highest levels of government) and I decided to learn to rollerskate. The place we went was 100% working class. So welcoming and inclusive and genuine.

My friend was the kind of slightly-shy geek who was a bit awkward with women. One of the regulars, a very attractive woman who was also an expert skater, would ask him to roller dance with her. Not to tease him, but to make sure he enjoyed the session. I thought that was so kind.
