I think that’s probably true—but Buddhism and Christianity are the only ones whose history I know enough about to say anything.

I've said similar things with respect to how Buddhism becomes established, i.e. by converting the ruling elite. Of course they only convert when they see some advantage. But one must add that Buddhism also transcended this throughout history.
