Sturgeon's Law aside, compared to the past, magazine publishing today seems to be a) more enlisted into the culture war, b) more about writer status and intellectual fashion. Those are both very low bars, but consider the arc of eg The New Republic.

Blogging has fallen out of vogue but the best thinkers are still there. The incentives to bring those thinkers to a mass audience are gone.
