Every other religion takes it for granted that you need to pay clergy, one way or another. It’s a dysfunctional historical accident that American Buddhism is mostly an exception.

I agree - but also the Buddha stated that monks and nuns should only take what is offered to them - which many take to mean "monks should be beggars." I think this has promulgated elsewhere beyond America, sadly. :-(

Key point, yes. Also in traditional Buddhism people thought dana bought them merit toward a better rebirth. Cheap at the price.
