He’s heavily influenced by Minsky’s 1985 _Society of Mind_, which he does cite (p441) although he gets Minsky’s first name wrong :(

I was a student of Minsky’s. He was a genius, and the book had a huge impact in 1985, but within a few years it was apparent that the theory is unworkable, and no one in cognitive science has taken it seriously since. It’s a fascinating historical curiosity of a dead end.

Is it particularly the case that critique is taken personally in the Buddhist world? I haven’t encountered that concern so prominently until these discussions.

That is my impression. I’ve described mainstream American Buddhism “the religion of niceness.” But it may just be me. I am not as considerate of others’ feelings as I should be.https://vividness.live/2011/06/10/nice-buddhism/ …

Does it have to be though? I think it's essential these things get hashed out in public. We all learn as a result. Wrong ideas are wrong matter whose nice head they reside in.

Is debunking pop Buddhism a project worth attempting at all? If so, where best to concentrate effort? Its whole modus operandi is to make stuff up and say “According to The Buddha,...”

I assume that theory, as you say, is built around Minsky’s theory. It’s a theory about subpersonalities. Correct?
-
That’s my impression, yes.

Culadasa’s book is the only one that I’m aware of that proposes a theory for why the experience of cessation itself would be transformative.
