As an outsider to Theravada-derived practice, it’s questionable for me to express doubts about it. However, I’ve had serious reservations for a decade or more, as I’ve occasionally written. Due to both ignorance and wanting to avoid sectarianism, I’ve avoided being too explicit.

I have found myself in strong agreement with what
@evantthompson has said in this discussion.@_awbery_ and I have discussed this extensively for years. This on-going project emerges in part from that:https://vajrayananow.wordpress.com/2019/06/01/journaling-a-staged-path/ … - 14 more replies

Maybe I missed it, but you referred a lot to how representationalism doesn't work, but not to *why* it doesn't work. A good summary somewhere?

If you are up for reading a book, the “show notes” point at several that are squarely about this. Varela,
@evantthompson, & Rosch’s is probably the most readable! There’s lots of ways of coming at this, and it’s hard to write up in less than a book and more than a phrase. - 10 more replies

nice set of namechecks. Stafford Beer was also a very early yogi, having picked it up along with a lot of other orientalism in India - must ask his surviving partner if she knows if he was into buddhism too!
