Makes sense. If I wanted to teach pH to someone I'd just use titrations. Fall back on the good old fashion 19th century rule of atoms in = atoms out, lets not think too much about what they're doing in between.

[pH] is just the amount of [HCl]/[NaOH] you need to hit something with in order for it to not be basic/acidic anymore. Does that imply that there are [H+] in solution somewhere? An exercise for the reader.
