Borges was not a good choice for Actual Literature. I've now read his "Labyrinths" collection and it's interesting but very much not my thing. I'm too attached to there being actual characters in fiction (things that read as fairy tales sometimes get an exemption).

I'm actually not sure how true this is. A lot of these are things that I think would seem much less clever and more tiresome if you tried to build a real story around them

possibly true of his later period? he went blind in old age and many of his later works were given by dictation to an assistant because Borges himself had lost his faculties. Borges' interest in writing was using text as a psychoactive transmission medium though, and it shows.
