I didn’t have a high opinion of him, or know him at all well, but that was probably some of the most useful advice I ever got. Mentoring can come from unexpected angles.

What I do regret in terms of business understanding is having never worked as a middle manager in a well-run mid/large company. All my prior management experience was in badly-run startups. I learned a lit about what not to do, but had almost no positive role models.
