Have you encountered the idea of "threshold concepts"? It's an education theory thing but when I encountered it it occurred to me this might be a good way to engage with a new field - find out the threshold concepts in it and just learn those

They're not quite what you're talking about but might be a good way to identify them, and you get X education people writing about them rather than X people, so maybe less triumphalist

You can’t do this by reading X textbooks, because those are always constructed as triumphalist narratives about how X is the Correct Way To Think About Y, and they bury all the ways the field doesn’t work, which is what is most important to know.
