The popularity of this concept of """the"" scientific method" is baffling. Basically no philosophers of science held that such a thing existed post-Kuhn, and that wasn't universally believed before then. Yet it is The Standard taught in many public schools.
Yup; and nearly all scientists claim to believe in it, although two minutes of consideration of their own typical working day would be adequate to disprove it. It’s a law of nature that everyone has to have a religion, and this is one of them.
It just smells of bad education to me. Where did the phrase even come from and why is it the standard?
like, it's what is taught to children and teenagers. It's not something scientists make up for themselves and teach at the level of post-secondary
It’s quasi-religious propaganda. I think the point is to inculcate children with An Appreciation For The Value Of Science. Since it’s completely irrelevant to actual science, actual scientists never notice it’s nonsense, and repeat it back when needing a slogan-level explanation
@KevinSimler Although, unfortunately, it’s not *completely* irrelevant; it’s sometimes actively misleading, and leads to scientific errors, which is why I’m ranting about it.
In many fields advanced undergrad / beginning graduate students were taught that p<0.05 NHST is the embodiment of [Popperian] Scientific Method, and so they accepted that uncritically. (Maybe many still are taught that and still do accept it?)
It's also a part of a huge philosophical error that places physics as metaphysics, which in turn makes the rest of philosophy, especially ethics, completely impossible.
