Isn’t REAL difference simply that the scientist is happy to accept knowledge as provisional, the philosopher insists on nothing less than perfection? A “real’ scientist is not going to think “sure the sun has risen 10^12 times, but tomorrow maybe it won’t” is a useful analysis...
That seems to sum it up every time I try to peer into what “philosophy of science” is all about.
Hmm. Is it really as simple as that? A meta-rationalist is nothing but a rationalist who constantly holds in the back of his/her mind “maybe I’m wrong”?
Uh, no… “meta-rationality” means examining the specific relationships between different rational systems and reality, and between teach other.
(“Maybe I’m wrong” is Bayesianism, more-or-less. Valuable but doesn’t take you very far.)
Does Bayesianism get you all the way from Newton+Maxwell to Planck to Bohr to Schrodinger? Maybe in some super general sense, but seems to me there’s something more. A willingness to admit error beyond Bayes? 1/
Bayes seems like it gets you to change the coefficients of your epicycles. Kinda like Bayes gives you a continuous tweaking of weights, but few people are willing to utterly expand the set of entities the weights applies to? 2/
Or maybe that’s what “scientific creativity” MEANS? The ability + skill + willingness to go beyond just tweaking the weights of known entities? //
I think so! This is “ontological remodeling,” which is a central meta-rational operation.
