A bunch of body people I respect say the answer is no, this stuff is pathologies of modernity. They have lots of arguments for this; I'm not sure how good they are. Pix of non-Western / non-modern people are interesting, though!
The better martial arts systems (e.g. BJJ and MMA) are good as all-around workouts, and develop functional strength, fitness, flexibility, and endurance, and have a social aspect that may or may not be a plus.
