A 🧵 reflecting on @KevinSimler’s interactive essay. It’s fun and easy—read it first! His post has a sudden plot twist toward the end, and takes on a darker tone. [SPOILERS of sorts coming]https://twitter.com/KevinSimler/status/1128079359267430400 …

FWIW The end game in this (great!) post is exactly why I was arguing that there is a role for universities. I've been playing with similar arguments for a while (with much more lame simulations). Old version of this in: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.1001691 … +

Oh, my, yes, also percolation theory! Parallel scientific discovery is a sign that the time is right :)

I'm convinced there's something really productive/generative in the idea of network architecture (and institutional drivers of it) and how it effects percolation, both as a metaphor and as a model. Key insight so far, its about dynamics of network architecture, not state+

Cycles of enclosure (effectively creating higher internal connectivity and transmissability) followed by opening up to disseminate, challenge & negotiate are crucial. 'Careerists' in Kevin's last simulation may play a critical role in first phase & need to be removed for second
