How to climb out of the pit of nihilism. (Or existentialism, which is nihilism lite.) That’s a bad place to find yourself, and there is an antidote. Clear and concise (despite seemingly long table of contents). https://twitter.com/coyotespike/status/1127255586398199808 …

Something in this post bothers me; in what sense is one enjoying the 'ritual' of the coffee rather than the _coffee_?

He’s borrowing from the Dreyfus and Kelley book here. That passage in the book didn’t work for me, but maybe just because I don’t much like coffee and like the hassle of making it even less. Not sure. I think it’s true that rituals create meaning; wish the example had worked 4 me

There’s also sportsball rituals in the book and those didn’t work for me either. I think they were trying to find ones “everyone” can relate to, and specifically avoiding religious & political ones to avoid readers getting stuck on the object level there

Although they did discuss the nuremberg rallies as a cautionary tale

Maybe beacause ritual is all tied up with delayed gratification? Unlike other forms of delayed gratification it’s delay for delay’s sake - in order to intensify the desire, not because it’s necessary for the outcome.
