In "The Great Realignment" @peterboghossian explains to @peternlimberg how rational fundamentalists and rational atheists are finding common cause against anti-rational political forces—as I semi-jokingly predicted.https://anchor.fm/intellectualexplorersclub/episodes/Peter-Boghoassian---The-Great-Realignment-e3vobd …

Boghossian, a leftist atheist, is infamous among fundamentalists as the author of _Manual for Creating Atheists_ which sparked a startlingly effective "street epistemology" movement for evangelizing Christians into atheism.

Boghossian is infamous AGAIN for attacking anti-rational pseudo-academic work in what he calls "grievance studies." He tells
@peternlimberg that he's had a deluge of "I never thought I'd say this to you of all people but I'm 100% with you" support from fundamentalists.3 replies 0 retweets 14 likesShow this thread -
Boghossian suggests that, in a Great Realignment, the major axis of politics may be shifting to rational vs anti-rational, systematic vs anti-systematic, collapsing the old left/right distinction. I suggested something similar in 2016: https://meaningness.com/metablog/communal-vs-systematic-politics …pic.twitter.com/MKoetzBkAI

He points also to developing alliances between groups that ignore their left/right differences to join in anti-rational causes. He cites a divisive "wokeness" movement within fundamentalism (first I've heard of this). Feminist-Islamist alliances might be another example?

Boghossian says he thinks the anti-rational insurgency will necessarily collapse because it has no structure of justification. I am less optimistic: Removing any feeling of need for justification is exactly why it is powerful and attractive! https://meaningness.com/metablog/communal-vs-systematic-politics …pic.twitter.com/rhFxvWSRlL

If the people in Occupy felt no need to justify themselves, then why was Graebers Debt book so popular amongst them? This seems exceedingly uncharitable and wrong to me.

I almost completely agree with you, especially being close to the Occupy movement's inner workings myself, but I think the overall bent of the thread is on point, particularly where David ends it:https://twitter.com/Meaningness/status/1127268293981511680 …

How would you say Peterson fits into this "Great Realignment" idea? Or the overwhelming majority of fundamentalists that voted for Trump?

The majority of fundamentalists are anti-systematic, I think. Boghossian points to a systematic vs anti-systematic split within that movement. He describes William Lane Craig as an example of a systematic fundamentalist; one who has a coherent apologetics.

I don’t fully understand JBP’s work, but I think he’d align with systematic forces against anti-systematic ones.

JPB holds to a theory of truth where whatever is most useful is "true". You can see this in his debate with Sam Harris. Seems pretty "anti-systematic". Or look at his answer to this question https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIB05YeMiW8 … Interesting that he chooses to align with systematic forces no?pic.twitter.com/oDLfRShbJB

I think this is a sign that Left and Right still maintain their heft. JPB aligns w/ Sam harris bc both want to push back the modern Left. Had a convo with
@olivertraldi that seems relevant https://twitter.com/123456789blaaa/status/1118913591586041859?s=20 … )Count Bla added,
