Remember being shocked by how good the coffee was in McDonalds in Australia. Better than nearly most gourmet coffee places in ROW.

Yeah, been trying to figure out what the deal is. I don’t get it. I post bags of European ground coffee here whenever I can. That’s drinkable, at least. But coffee in Australia was never bad. Even at little corner shops.

I've heard rumors that "good coffee" was sort of an Australian innovation, although that's a title that seems to be moving North; see this thread for details:https://twitter.com/scottyweeks/status/1086338290406604801?s=21 …

To be fair New York only had good coffee as of about nine years ago, after all those Aussie work visas came through and our coffee shops got staffed up with antipodals. US coffee culture has always been more of a west coast thing.

I would trace “good” Australian coffee to Melbourne’s Greek & Italian communities (4th gen now?). But really, it’s nothing on a typical Italian espresso. Good old article abt why Melbourne has only 1 Starbucks:https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2008-08-07/32188 …

Am I the only weirdo who found most espresso in Italy undrinkable compared to Intelligentsia or La Colombe?

I found the espresso in Italy bad to horrible also. Was puzzled.

Perhaps “Italy” is too broad a category. My experiences were on the beaches of the Cinque Terra after 3 years of *London* coffee (which in ‘04 was 😵)

My experiences were also mainly in highly touristy areas. So maybe you have to Search Out The Real Italy

From my experience the real Italy was just as bad. Spent a month bumming around Sicily and Tuscany. Maybe north is better?
