Asked to recommend an intro algorithms text, I had no idea, but was curious and checked out the most popular ones. They’re all awful—not as books—but because the material covered shouldn’t be taught at that level. It’s mostly junk. Historical curiosities & intellectualization.

Well, I’m suggesting that much of what’s in the books I looked at should not be part of an undergraduate curriculum (in any field).

Software Engineering seems usually to be taught as a module within a Computer Science degree. It seems it should be the other way around. Or just separate them entirely...

I think it's far more fundamental than this: the folk failing FizzBuzz, or unable to implement toy problems based around the pigenhole principle, are running into far more basic issues than those presented by unknowably large codebases, Yet there's tons of them.

Some of that's because we teach coding, at best, as chicken-sexing, where there's some important skill we can't actually describe in a coherent way. But the deep problem is that we teach it as information to be retrieved, not problems to be solved.

Education and HR are on the same track, they'd rather test for manual memorization from a specific major revision because they're not capable of assessing comprehension. 10 design patterns are going to get far more milage than 10 regex patterns.

software engineering still requires knowing the math tricks in context. no other point to a CS degree honestly than learning how to think with rigor. otherwise you aren’t the master.
