    >66% of 500 biz execs believed their company was dependent on government-granted special privileges. The more they believed that, the more likely they were to “believe in free markets” and also to believe that “governments should favor specific firms.” https://www.mercatus.org/system/files/mitchell-culture-favoritism-mercatus-special-study-v1.pdf …

Paper is by @MattMitchell80, @eastman_scott, & @_TamaraWinter . I haven't dived into the details, but what I've read is interesting, it looks like careful work, and there's tons of data tables. https://www.mercatus.org/system/files/mitchell-culture-favoritism-mercatus-special-study-v1.pdf …pic.twitter.com/PYRNiDigiR

More and more of GDP is tied up in industries dependent on government favoritism. Their execs are less likely to think innovation and benefiting customers are important to success. Has anyone quantified how much of the economic Great Stagnation is due to this?pic.twitter.com/C8WDse0odL

how do they hold two apparently contradictory beliefs? is one of them a proxy or polite speech for a different belief? e.g. does "believe in free markets" actually stand in front of "believe in access to global consumer markets for my firm's products"?

I think that's a possibility. We used pretty similar language in both questions, though. My interpretation is that these business leaders are more likely to approve of free markets in the abstract, but not on the margin. (1/2)

Big business likes government regulation because they can afford to take the hit and the little guy can't. In the long run they get bigger market share.

The more that biz execs believe their company is dependent on govt-granted special privileges, the more they deceive themselves and voters by advocating "free markets” and pretending that their privilege is not the result of hard work in currying/mantaining Govt favor. Surprise?
