The main sticking point for the future of Vajrayana Buddhism, imo. Good discussion, especially from Pema Khandro Rinpoche (a white woman lama who teaches in Berkeley, CA).

The challenge for both teachers and students is to develop ways of interacting that preserve the intense power of Vajrayana transmission and the possibility of unique, individualized instruction, while respecting contemporary cultural, social, and moral norms.

In general, I think what people have in mind with “the guru model” is some sort of centralized hub and spoke schema, where students connect to the guru in a vertical relationship supported by a centralizing hierarchy.pic.twitter.com/FLcBiP5y4y

Ah… then “it’s not the shape, it’s the specific power dynamics” seems the right diagnosis (or a significant part of one).

Useful, non-flappy conversation between
@VincentHorn and@Meaningness about the teacher-student relationship in Buddhism.https://twitter.com/Meaningness/status/1108982296281927680 … -
Generally I prefer to use ‘teacher’ not ‘guru’ when talking about models and relationships in Buddhism for, I hope, obvious reasons. It’s unfair on both parties to the relationship to set up expectations of religious infallibility, which ‘guru-disciple’ seems to suggest.
