I think some have commented that 4 comes much easier and more natural than 3 for some people (me included), which I also think complicates things. Any thoughts on that?

Dispositional differences? Innate differences in cognition? Different life experiences? Stanovich's decoupling stuff seems highly relevant. Does that literature talk about factors that influence whether people decouple?

I mean I do definitely feel like I had a qualitative shift in my thinking at one point, but what *got* me there was an attempt to just keep following the direction of the river until it became apparent that there wasn't anywhere further to go in that direction. But I could still

justify the need to shift direction using arguments from the previous stage: the framework itself could be used to show that the current direction was inadequate, after which the new direction became an extension of the old framework as it pointed out its own limitations.
