How knowledge works: ▶️ You start with some existing knowledge (models/traditions/genes/memes). 🔽 Some of that contains problems (two parts contradict). 🔽 Try a modification to solve it. 🔽 Criticise to see if the solution works. 🔽 Modify as needed. 🔃 New problem.

The first step of 'existing knowledge' is necessary — that's where problems come from. And problems are what thinking consists of. It's impossible to think about something without some model. "Model-free" just means your models are less about the form.https://twitter.com/reasonisfun/status/1106853147417423872?s=21 …

One can't get knowledge from ignorance. What's happening in negative space drawing is not being model-free, but *using a better model*. And that's what's happening in philosophy (&improv, etc.) too. It feels like being model-free because it's using inexplicit/intuition models.

👆Where #CriticalRationalism and other fallibilist philosophies like #MetaRationalism may differ. (one of the few places they seem to be in actual disagreement? @Meaningness @Malcolm_Ocean)

I don't see a disagreement here! My explicit knowledge of both philosophies is a bit past "I've read Beginning of Infinity and Meaningness". Possible I'm misunderstanding either here. Also possible I'm using them both fluidly in such a way that they don't FEEL they disagree 😉🙃

That's partially splitting hairs about the word "disagree", but it's important. My eyes constantly disagree about what I'm seeing, but that just gets integrated into a 3D view, not fought over. Physics & biology emphasize different things but are both models of matter.

I'm actually not sure if #MetaRationalism is a single philosophy at all, or if it's just pointing at "philosophies meta to rationalism" 🤔 (the implication being that there may be multiple ways to do that) (but of course all philosophies have variations, over time & between ppl)

Yeah, it's a word I just made up, and so shouldn't be taken seriously. A very few other people used it before me, but only casually, with no detailed account. I haven't yet given a detailed account either, and don't own the word, so it's quite nebulous for now.

Also David have you looked into any of Iain McGilchrist's stuff on brain hemisphere lateralization? It's profoundly relevant to your work. He frames the modernity madness & breakdown as being characteristic of the left hemisphere denying the role of the right. Core to all of this
