☸︎ David L. McMahan, in his revelatory _Making of Buddhist Modernism_, described it as “global folk Buddhism.” The de facto meditation system of global folk Buddhism is the Mahasi method (with local variations). It’s become market-dominant, nearly synonymous with “meditation.”

It’s also maybe something to do with the nature of Sutra, where most meditations originate. Sutra is more universalist, particularly in outcome, than other traditional paths; that feature continues into contemporary atomisations. Universalist ways tend towards cultural monopoly.
