I have read only a little. (Including the SSC post.) I found it unpersuasive. I may have missed the point. I thought it was unlikely enough to turn out to be meaningful that I wasn’t motivated to learn more. That may have been a mistake.

When I was snarking about Kalman filters on twitter recently, I was subtweeting Friston in part. Based on the sources I read (which may be inaccuate) his stuff amounts to hallucinating Kalman filters everywhere, and then changing the subject when you point out they aren’t there.

One important point Friston makes (apparently; I haven’t read any of his stuff) is that the mixture of top-down and bottom-up processing in the brain is really important and interesting. (My PhD thesis said so too.)

Unfortunately, we know almost zero about how that works (unless there’s been a breakthrough I haven’t heard about, which is possible). “Kalman filters everywhere!” is unlikely to be the answer imo.

I feel bad about saying negative things about work I’m mostly ignorant of, but… there it is.
