When I was snarking about Kalman filters on twitter recently, I was subtweeting Friston in part. Based on the sources I read (which may be inaccuate) his stuff amounts to hallucinating Kalman filters everywhere, and then changing the subject when you point out they aren’t there.

One important point Friston makes (apparently; I haven’t read any of his stuff) is that the mixture of top-down and bottom-up processing in the brain is really important and interesting. (My PhD thesis said so too.)
