Too late to save the university system? I suspect so. What phoenix can rise from the clouds of toxic dust and noise as it implodes?https://twitter.com/EricRWeinstein/status/1101596081660575748 …

It seems to have long predated the subculture era, so maybe it was something else before then, and in that case, the transition from the other thing into a subculture seems like an interesting matter.

Interesting point... there were subcultures going back long before the era, and still up to the present, though. What was distinctive about 1975-2000 was that subculturalism was the dominant mode of the cultural leading edge.

Why would it implode? There's still enough space for it to ossify and bureaucratise more and, most importantly, find more government teats to latch onto.

Yeah I don’t expect the dramatic collapse in my overwrought metaphor. Instead a gradual slide into vestigial irrelevance. Like the postal system. Its only remaining function is as a makework jobs program.

I'm skeptical of a theory that treats all colleges and universities the same. It seems like there is enough variation for an evolutionary process to work? Some should be able to do much better than others.

Well... the current institutional incentives appear to reward optimizing aspects that have negative social value. That can’t continue indefinitely. Irish Elk syndrome: rewarding massive investment in counter-productive features leads to extinction.

I wonder. I suspect that academia was not a subculture but an institution. It got perverted through the incentives of subparadigmatic (methodologist) science.
