Moving @slatestarcodex report on left-wing anti-speech activity makes me wonder: How much is genuinely due to changing cultural conditions, vs. astroturf deliberately orchestrated by a small number of powerful people? (At risk of conspiracy theorizing.) https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/02/22/rip-culture-war-thread/ …pic.twitter.com/B8bGe5ib8O

Orchestration by a small number of people *is* the changing condition. It's become far easier for a small group of likeminded lunatics to connect, organize, and coordinate on a target, because social distance has shrunk by orders of magnitude.

Qs: Was a large fraction of the population always consumed by insane hate, but we didn’t have the means to notice? If not, why have many more converted? Or have they? What prevents coordination among moderates to break preference falsification & say “no, this is wrong?”

And, are the orchestrators actually lunatics, or are they employed in perfectly rational, competent, well-funded operations that have specific aims quite different from those they give to useful idiots? (Again recognizing I’m sounding like a conspiracy theorist, but…)

On the organizational front, @hradzka has great knowledge. Beyond that... I grew up with activists. They’re generally broken people, who will break others into their own shape given half a chance. The scale of Online and “everything is political” has given them that chance.

Not only is it cheaper and easier to coordinate strikes, those strikes are vastly more effective if you can get them into the news cycle. It's the literal definition of terrorism: engaging in politics by instilling terror in the wider population.

I think a large proportion of people have always been at least susceptible to being temporarily consumed by hate, and this has been harnessed splendidly using modern technology from the radio to the internet. Mobs and posses used to at least require proximity and risk.

Um, the first documented massive antisemitic pogrom in Germany literally pre-dates the printing press. People being irrational hateful assholes out to murder someone because some kind of spookghost allegedly told someone they know that it's Right Thing is historical norm

It's in the very nature of moderation to be vacillating: "Well free speech and open discussion are good, but so is my job/mental health/reputation." Even when a moderate says something is wrong, he leaves it at that and withdraws.

I don’t think a large fraction were (or are) consumed by hate. What IS the case is that a large fraction (including people you think are above average intelligence and independence) are EXTREME followers. Real independence is very rare. And today hate is what is being followed.
