“Well, yeah, OK, so it’s a dumb algorithm that just splices together bits of text it found on the internet, but that’s all we humans do too, so it’s time to panic” is a nice illustration of my theory here about why people have ignorant opinions about AI:https://twitter.com/Meaningness/status/1096866752456060928 …

Why do people with little/no knowledge of AI have strong opinions about its rate of progress? I suspect these are really opinions about what it is to be human. They’re intuitions about what aspects of experience are important; about what life is like.

Although in this case the reasoning seems to go in the other direction: “It’s time to panic about AI because Reasons, and this is the best AI we’ve got, so people must work like that.”

(In case you aren’t following the topic, I was subtweeting this post from @slatestarcodex, who is in general excellent and brilliant, but who does not have technical understanding of AI.)https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/02/19/gpt-2-as-step-toward-general-intelligence/ …

Ok I’m glad I’m not the only one to have problems with this particular piece. I know nothing of AI but I know a bit about ideas and I don’t think “regurgitation algorithm” is how they come about. I’ve seen this view recently with other friends and it makes me annoyed 🤔

I got a really seriously case of Someone Being Wrong On The Internet about it. But I’m blinded by irrational quasi-religious commitments sometimes too. And I think that’s what happened for him.

People have been reacting like that since ELIZA, too, that's an impressive 50 years of AI being our imminent doom.

If your profession looks likely to be automated, & soon, & you don't really have other skills or interests that can be easily monetized, of course you will be panicking about automation because you're staring poverty in the face. Doubly true in the USA, bc there's no healthcare.

We all want to talk about What It All Means, and shallow takes are kinda bad, but is this panic or just interest and hyperbole? Nobody's stocking up on canned goods. To look on the bright side, people are interested. How do we work with that?
