In my experience (since I tend to work in a similar way) this works well for a generalist role. Do you find that following this approach leads to becoming an expert?

I think it's necessary but not sufficient for acquiring expertise - expertise requires periods of intense study and/or reflection, but most of the day to day work of acquiring it is going to be selecting problems and working on them like this.
