You should be stockpiling food for Brexit: https://www.drmaciver.com/2019/02/you-should-be-stockpiling-food-for-brexit/ … Short post on why you really at this point should have a Brexit stockpile, and some suggestions on what should be in it (If you want to skip to the suggested list: https://amzn.to/2DDfaFe ).

And if reading this post makes you go "this fucking country", believe me I'm right there with you.

This post is partly because I'm getting increasingly nervous about how many people who I personally care about do not have adequate Brexit survival plans. I'm worried about everyone else too, but I can't do so much to fix that.

I haven’t read the paper yet, but I suspect I will yell at my computer a lot while I do. I’m guessing it is pretty much just Dissociated Press with a large training set, in which case any claim of interestingness whatsoever is going to infuriate me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissociated_press …

I haven't read the actual paper, but AIUI: kinda, but not really? The difference is that Transformer networks (https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.03762 ) can look back arbitrarily far in the text-so-far, whereas Markov chains only condition on the last n words for some (usually small) fixed n.

Yes, I did get that. And it does result in better output because it’s more focused. But there’s nothing interesting going on if that’s all it is. HN and Twitter are like OMG this is terrifying, the singularity is nigh.

Depends on what you find interesting, I think! It's not evidence of consciousness, or a real ability to understand or manipulate the world. But I find it impressive, and I think it's right to worry it could be used for psyops/fake news/griefing.

I guess. In the latter use case, the question would be whether there’s some delivery channel that you can brute-force with gigabytes of spam cheaper and more effectively than with somewhat-more-coherent megabytes written by cheap humans.

          Replying to @Meaningness @pozorvlak and

In vaguely related news, a few days ago I installed a new paid anti-spam service, and I suspect it’s sending fake spam comments to my sites so it can demonstrate how effective it is at blocking them.
